The D&G Mamma: Accepted or Archaic?

Long-standing Italian designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, have found themselves at the centre of a social media storm after expressing their somewhat controversial views on same-sex adoption. Following their AW15 collection, ‘Viva La Mamma’, in Milan Fashion Week recently, the design duo spoke to Panorama about their allegiance towards the ‘traditional’ family, in other words a family with a mother and a father, ‘No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed’. When asked if the pair would like to be fathers themselves, Domenico replies, ‘I’m gay, I can not have a child. I believe that we can not have everything in life’. Image: Style.com After creating such a positive and powerful message about the beauty of motherhood in their AW15 collection (featuring a pregnant model, the Spice Girl’s ‘Mama’ song and beautiful bambinos carried down the catwalk) this sudden outburst is honest yet evidently very unexpected by the fashion community. As the article spread, Elton John lashed back at the Italian pair expressing his …

JANUARY FAVOURITES

FASHION  Fashion-wise, January has been a month of Couture ogling and last-minute sale shopping. The SS15 Couture shows arrived and beatified my Instagram feed for a few days. Although the shows don’t inspire me as much as Ready-to-wear, I can’t help but admire the craftsmanship that goes into them. Dior is usually always my favourite and this season was no exception! I really like how Raf Simons ensures that the Couture collection isn’t too far away from RTW in terms of the approach and inspiration. Even though he uses historical influences, his Couture shows still feel modernistic and unlike a collection of replicas. Ultimately, it is the design teams that must be congratulated for these shows as the fine detail that goes into Haute Couture is impeccable and beyond fashion’s expectations. This video tells the story of how Dior Couture SS15 was created from the design rooms to the catwalk. The pure effort that goes into these shows is phenomenal! I loved the cleanliness of the stripes on the pleated skirts in this collection – …

How to dress ‘Street-Style’

SANDAL WEATHER? Even in the depths of Winter, fashion girls can be spotted donning a pair of leather sandals they picked up in Santorini during their summer holidays. It’s a tough one to pull off and it’s mostly all about the dimensions. Your legs must be covered and because we’re talking A/W that pretty much leaves you with one option: long palazzo-style pants, only in black. It’s important you assure the rest of us that you have carefully calculated your sandals for the cold season and you haven’t just thrown on your summer flats in a moment of craziness and walked out the door in minus temperatures. A pedicure is evidently imperative. So is a pair of bold and black tinted sunnies; the only type of sunglasses allowed in Winter, plus they say ‘I’m wearing sunnies in Winter therefore it is sunny therefore I am somewhat allowed to wear my sandals without looking too cray cray’. Now you know. Shop the look at Mango : Leather Sandals, £24.99; Palazzo pants, £22.45; Cotton cropped jacket, £29.99; …

Break the mould: Black and Navy

Have you ever styled an outfit to perfection and then instantly gasped in horror when you realise you have mixed navy and black? If the answer is yes then have nothing to fear. Black and navy blue are perfectly acceptable companions when it comes to piecing together an outfit. Say so long to the mysterious myth surrounding this colour combo, if you haven’t already – your style cred will not diminish, in fact, it will prosper. A mixture of navy and black creates an imbalance of a classical nature. As seasons pass, navy becomes the new black and then black becomes the new navy but the savvy fashion-goers betray the golden rules and simply wear the two classics at the same time. Not ground breaking fashion, I know, however the result is something extraordinarily basic and shows that some style rules are made to be broken. When I think of black and navy, I think of a Celine girl – edgy minimalism and always chic. Styling this trend? Tanned legs, red lips, little accessories – …

The rise of Sneaker Culture: Have you joined the flat side yet?

Mrs Beckham likes her heels. Sources say she can’t wear flats and avoids the gym as she can’t get her head around the footwear. VB, it seems like the rest of the fashion community aren’t following in your vertiginous footsteps on this matter, even if you are the Queen of style. 2014 was the year of the trainer. Every self respecting fashionista was seen in them – whether they were on the front row or on the tube. It’s a story that started out with a young girl named Lily Allen. A pop star at a young age, her ‘thing’ was her unique style and her wacky character. Prom dresses teamed with a pair of Nike Air Max 90s quickly became her signature look, yet the fashion world didn’t seem to get it.  A few years later, it seems like they’ve cottoned on with a little help from the ever-growing sports luxe trend. With the likes of Stella McCartney introducing sportswear to their runway collections and designing for Adidas, as well as blogger royalty, such …

Summer Holidays: What to Wear

So you’ve been counting down the weeks until your Summer holiday since Christmas and you have finally reached single figures. Get those suitcases open on your bedroom floor in anticipation (we all do it) and start packing! But first, you must shop. Read my guide on what you should take with you on your S/S 14 vacation… SCUBA  Kate Upton displayed the scuba trend quite impeccably in Vogue’s June issue recently. You may not have her body, but you can replicate her swimwear style. Triangl are an Aussie brand I have recently fallen in love with. Their swimwear is simple and beautifully crafted out of neoprene to ensure your body looks its best. The perfect pal for the season’s sportswear trend, you can sunbathe in style in one of their designs. Opt for a neon lacquered pastel with a black outline or be adventurous with an animal print. Also, just to pre warn, if you check out their website you will encounter serious body envy. Kate Upton for Vogue UK June 2014; Neon Orange Arizona Sunset …
