How to perfect your Winter Skincare routine

As the country transforms into the set of Gilmore Girls, the whole nation completely forgets that summer even happened and, let’s face it, the countdown to Christmas begins. I’m not going to lie – I am a sucker for Autumn. My shopping addiction has tripled in the past few weeks as I just cannot stop buying knitwear and ankle boots. I even broke the ultimate ‘basic b*tch’ cliché yesterday and purchased an Autumn Leaves Yankee candle…

As the air chills, it has become apparent that my current skincare routine just isn’t going to cut the mustard any longer. Although I have an oily skin type, I feel like my skin has been crying out for moisture these past few weeks. I have slowly started to up my game and whacked out the Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream – an absolute classic for the winter months. I particularly love it as a lip balm and I’ve been applying it every night to keep cracked lips at bay (because, eww).

So, when Victoria Leeds invited me to their Winter Skincare event at the Victoria Quarter recently, I was like, yes please. Now, I didn’t have to sprawl the internet for the latest lotions and potions to get me through Winter – the professionals could teach me instead.

I love skincare, however I feel like half the time, I really don’t know what I should be looking for, what ingredients I should avoid and what suits my skin type. So, having the opportunity to chat to Grace and Ruby from the Space NK Pro Artist team in their shiny new Leeds shop was like being in the presence of two beauty goddesses – they knew their stuff. Having just got back from Paris Fashion Week (not jealous at all…), the pair were raving over Sunday Riley’s new U.F.O face oil – Ultra-clarifying Face Oil (clever, ey). Apparently used behind the scenes at shows such as Stella McCartney to give the models a mini facial, this green-toned oil is a skin-transformer. I was particular excited to hear that it’s specifically for oily skin (yay) and contains 1.5% of Salicylic Acid. Blended with tea tree and black cumin seed oil, you only need one teeny pump of this magical liquid each day to hydrate, soothe and nourish you skin during the winter months. Personally, I would probably use this as a night treatment as it smells so dreamy and is infused with chamomile, neroli and milk thistle.

Other products mentioned by the NK duo were the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit palette in Surreal Light. Designed to resemble the magical hour of warm evening light as the sun sets, this beautiful array of highlights, bronzers and blushes develops an incredibly flattering glow to your complexion. Ruby and Grace also introduced us to The Etherealist Skin Illuminating Foundation by Kevyn Aucoin – a brand I have never heard of before but Grace admitted it was her go-to range.

Next, we tootled along to the welcoming and familiar surroundings of Liz Earle. An absolute skincare classic, the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish is one of the most talked about cleansers in the world. Seriously, if you haven’t tried this before, what are you doing with your life? Enriched with cocoa butter, it is a dream to apply and absolutely perfect to use in the winter months. Since the event, I am back to using this product twice a day and I have fallen in love with it again. It’s just so quick to use and I can see the results straight away – it gives my skin such a lovely glow to keep that dull Winter complexion at bay. What I love about Liz Earle the most is how loyal their customers are – once you’ve tried Liz Earle once, it’s likely that you’ll keep buying their products in decades to come. We were also introduced to their brand new Superskin Overnight mask. Overnight masks are the bees’ knees because they’re just so easy – slap it on, go to sleep, wash it off in the morning and hey presto – brighter, smoother and firmer skin.

Next, we ventured to Kiehl’s. The Midnight Oil and the Skin Rescuer are long-time favourites of mine and have got me through the worst of breakouts in the past. With more of a focus on the science behind the products, Kiehl’s isn’t airy fairy – it’s very honest and usually does exactly what it says on the bottle/tub. I learned that an absolute must-have for Winter is the Ultra Facial Cream. Packed with moisturising Squalane and water-retaining Imperata Cylindrica, this is a skincare lover’s ultimate cream for the harsher months. It has even been tested by adventurers on Mount Everest. I was also super impressed with their scented Lip Balms. Available in Mint, Mango, Pear and Cranberry, they’re the perfect size to throw in your handbag and they’ll last you the whole Winter as a tiny amount goes a long way.
